Fair CAtch

Take What You Need, Not What You Can

fishermanHawai‘i boasts one of the world’s most unique ocean ecosystems, with 25 percent of its marine life existing nowhere else and more than 300,000 acres of coral reefs surrounding the main islands. But its reefs and fish populations are in a downward spiral. Fair Catch is a campaign to help restore Hawaii’s nearshore ocean by encouraging responsible fishing practices and supporting actions that protect it from further decline. The campaign is mobilizing native Hawaiians and fishers to lead the way in preserving this isolated, but fragile, ocean.

Fair Catch supported the recent passage of severe statewide restrictions on the use of lay gill nets, an indiscriminate and wasteful fishing gear. It is also working to promote responsible methods such as throw net and spear, and to improve enforcement of fisheries regulations.

Fair Catch is a partnership of SeaWeb, The Nature Conservancy and Malama Hawai‘i.
