The U.S. government proposed that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) include red and pink coral (Corallium) on the Appendix II list.

Corallium, known as precious coral, is the most valuable and most widely traded deep-sea coral species. Raw coral commands an auction price ranging from US $150 to $900 per kilogram. Individual pieces of finished jewelry and art can range from US $20 to $20,000.
An Appendix II listing for Corallium would have ensured the survival of the species by establishing consistent international regulations and a monitoring system for the coral trade. It could have provided range states with a vehicle to strengthen domestic management efforts and the international community with a venue to discuss and fund the future conservation of the species.
