Coral Reefs

  • Australian Coral Reef Society - A non-partisan coral reef forum for discussion and information transfer among scientists, government agencies and others interested parties to coral reef management.
  • Australian Institute of Marine Science - Contains comprehensive reports on coral reef bleaching, annual coral reef status surveys and the Great Barrier Reef. Also provides information on the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network.

  • The Coral Reef Alliance - A gateway to various Web sites containing images and information on coral reefs.
  • Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) - Government or professional level monitoring of coral reefs worldwide. Regional and national results are published in the Status of the Reefs reports published every two years.
  • The Coral Reef Report - A comprehensive report on the status of the world's reefs, categorized by region.
  • Environmental Media Services - Provides quick facts, recent survey findings on coral reefs and a list of expert contacts.
  • Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) - Provides comprehensive and up-to-date information surrounding the Great Barrier Reef, including status of coral bleaching, water quality, aquaculture, etc.
  • International Coral Reef Information Network (ICRIN) - Contains facts and photos on coral reefs. Other resources include hyperlinks to related Web sites, a coral reef community calendar, Q&A on coral reefs, and an international directory of coral reef organizations.
  • International Marinelife Alliance (IMA) Regional Programs - Contains brief overviews of coral reef conservation and ecology in Asia the Pacific islands. Also contains rich information on coral reef rehabilitation programs.
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coral Reef - A gateway Web site to all NOAA-related coral reef programs.
  • The Ocean Conservancy - Contains background information on artificial reefs.
  • Palau International Coral Reef Center - Contains information on Palau's marine environment.
  • Reef Base - The online information database of International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) targeted to reef managers, scientists and the general public. Provides facts, management, and statistics on coral reefs, reef fish, and reef fisheries categorized by country. News headlines regarding coral reefs are updated daily. The newly developed GIS section displays coral reef-related data on interactive maps using a Web browser.
  • ReefCheck - ReefCheck is a protocol for rapid assessment of reefs and is specifically designed for non-professionals and volunteers that carry out annual surveys.
  • The Reef Environmental Education Foundation - Contains a comprehensive list of links to related Web sites.
  • SeaWorld Education Department - Contains a collection of basic and comprehensive scientific facts about corals and coral reefs, such as habitat and distribution, physical characteristics, diet and eating habit, and anatomy and physiology, etc.
  • U.S. Coral Reef Task Force - Contains images, facts and information on U.S. government initiatives to conserve coral reefs.
  • Waikiki Aquarium Coral Research - Shows the aquarium's coral research and provides links to coral reef and coral species information.
  • Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Marine in Asia-Pacific - Contains information on the programs in the Asia Pacific.

Ecotourism

  • The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) - Contains a summary of TIES initiatives and a searchable database of eco-friendly travel sites worldwide.
  • International Year of Ecotourism 2002 - Contains reports on ecotourism and a calendar of related conferences and seminars.
  • The National Trust - Contains information on environmentally sustainable tourism.
  • Pacific Islands Development Program (PIDP) - The Pacific Islands Development Program (PIDP) conducts a broad range of activities to enhance the quality of life in the Pacific islands. The founding mission of PIDP, established in 1980, is to assist Pacific islands leaders in advancing their collective efforts to achieve and sustain equitable social and economic development consistent with the goals of the Pacific islands region's people.
  • Rare Center for Tropical Conservation Pacific Programs - Program on ecotourism promotes both economic and environmental sustainability in fragile natural areas.
  • Small Island Nations Ecotourism - Contains success stories compiled by Small Islands Developing States Network.
  • Takitumu Conservation Area (TCA) - The Takitumu Conservation Area in Rarotonga was established in 1996 by the three tribes that collectively own the land on which it is situated in order to protect the many unique plants and animals found in the area. Ecotourism was identified as the main activity for the TCA to become self-reliant after financial support from the South Pacific Biodiversity Conservation Programme ceased operations in June 2001.
