| In the most biodiverse marine ecosystems in the world, the SeaWeb Asia Pacific program is strengthening voices for ocean conservation by bridging the worlds of marine science, journalism, and public policy.
Local communities in Asia and the Pacific Islands rely on their rich marine resources for daily sustenance, economic development and traditions. Perhaps more than in any other region, quality of life directly depends on a healthy ocean. Unfortunately, the demands of a global economy often encourage unsustainable resource exploitation. We believe that protection of precious marine areas is best achieved locally. From village customs to mass communication, we understand and respect the unique needs of Asia Pacific populations and are helping them to speak for themselves on ocean conservation issues.
The Asia Pacific program works to amplify and clarify the messages of local scientists and ocean experts, and to connect journalists and decision-makers to ocean issues and specialists. It is our intention that these activities will produce:
- A better-informed and empowered ocean conservation community with the training and tools to influence policy decisions.
- A better-developed and engaged ocean ethic among the media and policymakers, with expert voices and champions ready to weigh in for ocean conservation.
- Informed opinion leaders and an informed public that value ocean protection.
We envision an Asia Pacific region where all people will act on the belief that a healthy ocean is vital to human life and a sustainable future.
