Honoring Our Blue Planet on
World Oceans Day and Beyond

World Oceans Day

On this World Oceans Day, the ocean is in the headlines worldwide thanks to the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster. As we celebrate all that the ocean offers us each day--from the oxygen we breathe, to food we eat, to recreation and enjoyment—let us reflect on and appreciate the efforts of all of those who are working to ensure a healthy ocean both today and for generations to come. World Oceans Day provides a focus for many activities celebrating the Sea including those listed below.

Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2010: Clean Energy and a Healthy Ocean

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is hosting its annual Capitol Hill Oceans Week (CHOW) seminars and associated activities from June 8 to 10. This year's theme of pursuing clean energy solutions couldn't be more timely. CHOW will "highlight the intersection between ocean and energy issues, including the ocean's diverse abilities to supply energy through current and emerging technologies and the myriad of ways in which energy production and consumption affect the ocean."

Celebrate with the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Institution is hosting a plethora of marine activities this month at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. The events kick off on June 8, World Ocean Day, with a free lecture from leading marine scientist Jeremy Jackson, director of the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation and a professor of oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who will talk about a "Brave New Ocean" in Baird Auditorium at 6 p.m. If you can't attend, view the talk via a live webcast at: http://ocean.si.edu/ocean-videos/changingtides/.

Understanding Sustainability

Hungry for more? On Saturday, June 12, get a taste of sustainability and science at a seafood buffet breakfast while listening to a panel of ocean experts—including SeaWeb President Dawn M. Martin—explain the connection between a healthy ocean and the seafood that we enjoy. National Public Radio science correspondent Richard Harris will moderate this Smithsonian Resident Associate Program.

Dive into Smithsonian's Ocean Portal

If you can't attend the Smithsonian in person, dive into the depths of its knowledge about the ocean and "Find Your Blue" online at its new, award-winning Smithsonian Ocean Portal. This website highlights how the ocean is a part of our lives every day and teaches ways you can help conserve it. Led by the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and in collaboration with more than 20 organizations, The Smithsonian Ocean Portal utilizes state-of-the-art, interactive Web technologies to create an online community where visitors can deepen their personal connection to the ocean and continually build upon their knowledge of and concern for the ocean with others. Visitors to the Smithsonian Ocean Portal can navigate their own exploration of the ocean by accessing a host of resources made available through the National Museum of Natural History's extensive marine science network and the best-in-class educational, scientific and intellectual assets from SeaWeb and other trusted partners. The Portal was recently named the People's Voice Winner for "Best Cultural Institution Website" in the 2010 Webby Awards competition.
