IUU Fishing: What's the Industry's Role?

NOAA’s recent announcement that it will be working with ten countries to address their failures to control Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities under their flagged vessels follows similar action by the European Union last year to list countries that had failed to meet EU IUU regulations. This all comes at a time when other governments, the conservation community, and many in industry are working together to develop responses to IUU fishing.

Shark Fin Soup

Shangri-La Announces Sustainable Seafood Policy And Discontinues Use Of All Shark Fin Products

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, host of SeaWeb’s 10th Annual Seafood Summit in Hong Kong, have announced their new ‘Sustainable Seafood Policy’ and the decision to cease selling all shark fin products. As part of their new policy, bluefin tuna and Chilean sea bass will also be phased out of all restaurants within the year.

Bluefin Tuna Sold for $736,000 in Record-Setting Auction

A new record was set on January 5, 2012 in Japan as the first auction of the year took place at Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market. Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura Co., placed the winning bid of ¥56.49 million for a 593-pound bluefin tuna. The previous record for the most expensive tuna was ¥32.49 million paid in 2011.

Maria Damanaki speaks at the Relais & Châteaux International Congress

Maria Damanaki, EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, spoke at the 37th annual International Congress of Relais & Châteaux. The meeting included over 600 Owners, Maîtres de Maison, and Grands Chefs from almost 60 countries. The association which includes the most unique destinations in the world, made a commitment to sustainable seafood sourcing in 2009.

Shark Fin Ban

Will demand for shark fin soup vanish faster than sharks?

Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels announced that, effective 2012, shark fin soup will no longer be served at any of the company’s establishments. This announcement validates some claims that support for the protection of sharks has been gaining support in Hong Kong, which facilitates an estimated 80% of the shark fin trade.
