Workshop 4: Applying the guidelines to the Celtic Sea, Dorking, UK, November 8–9, 2011
Celtic Sea stakeholders and the PISCES team came together last November in the UK for the 4th PISCES workshop. The objectives of the workshop were to:

  1. Review and provide feedback on the latest draft of the guidelines for implementing EBM in the Celtic Sea
  2. Provide an opportunity to various stakeholders to share and gain insights on voluntary measures for their sectors, and considering the opportunity for wider application and implementation
  3. Identify their networks and contacts who would undertake further review of the guidelines, to ensure widest uptake and buy-in from all stakeholders
  4. Decide on the way forward for finalizing the guidelines at the next and final workshop.

The next stakeholder workshop will take place in Spain during the week of April 23.

Workshop 3: Refining Guidelines, Brittany, France, June 14–15, 2011
The key objective of this workshop is to allow exchange of information and ideas between the Advisory Group and the stakeholders, which is an essential step in developing and refining the guidelines. Focus will be on refining and consolidating the draft guidelines to ensure they are relevant, realistic and practical.

Workshop 2: Formulating Guidelines, Cork, Ireland, November 23–24, 2010
In November 2010, PISCES held the second two-day workshop in Ireland to start creating practical guidelines for operating in the Celtic Sea.

Workshop outcomes:

  • Produced an emerging set of draft guidelines with a first set of objectives, and then identified actions for each objective.
  • Increased stakeholder understanding about the parameters of the PISCES project, what it seeks to achieve and how it fits into the legislative timeline.
  • Had an opportunity to explore potential spatial conflicts in the Celtic Sea.
  • Developed collaborative working relationships between a range of sectors and nationalities.

European Union Marine Policy Online Tutorial, October 4–8, 2010
This online tutorial on European Union (EU) marine policy, with foundation on ecosystem-based management and marine spatial planning, featured contributors: Franz Lamplmair of the EU Directorate-General, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries; Leo de Vrees of EU Directorate-General, Environment; Naomi Matthiesson of Defra, United Kingdom government; Ainhoa Pérez Puyol from the Division for the Protection of the Sea and Prevention of Marine Pollution, Spanish government; and a French government representative.

Marine Spatial Planning Online Tutorial, September 21–24, 2010
PISCES held online tutorials on marine spatial planning for stakeholders. Participants watched presentations and submitted their questions to leading marine experts virtually. It provided a greater understanding of marine management and spatial planning for the Celtic Sea. Contributors to the online tutorial included: Bud Ehler, President, Ocean Vision; Deerin Babb-Brott, Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs; Hermien Busschbach, EU Directorate-General Mare.

Workshop 1: Understanding the Ecosystem Approach, Cardiff, Wales, May 10–12, 2010
PISCES held the first of its workshops in May 2010 in Cardiff, Wales. Stakeholders representing multiple sectors and countries met for the first time to open discussions on the ecosystem-based approach to management.

Workshop outcomes:

  • Enhanced stakeholder knowledge and understanding of ecosystems and the Celtic Sea as well as the principles, challenges, benefits and policy framework of the ecosystem-based approach to management.
  • Identified common interests and investigated new ways of involving stakeholders and sharing information from all sectors in the PISCES project.
  • Gained an experience of different stakeholder engagement techniques.
  • Collaborated on strategies for promoting the project and fulfilling project goals.
  • Identified appropriate communication channels to encourage discussion and spreading of information within the PISCES group and wider.
