European Policy and Legislation

In 2007, the European Commission outlined its policy for the marine environment by establishing the Integrated Maritime Policy and accompanying Action Plan. This shifted management policy away from a sector-based approach and recognized the need to balance environmental sustainability with economic development. The Action Plan includes the creation of a roadmap for marine spatial planning, the promotion of a network of maritime clusters and the introduction of new legislation to protect the marine environment.
