SeaWeb's KidSafe Seafood initiative, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will participate in the National Aquarium's "Beyond the Boardwalk" Summer Fun Festival on June 26, 2010, in Baltimore. Aquarium visitors of all ages will participate in family friendly games and events. The activities are designed to inspire participants to understand the connections between ocean and human health, and to teach visitors what they can do to support a healthy ocean.

The festival honors World Oceans Day, a time to recognize and appreciate all that the ocean does to sustain life on Earth. This year's World Ocean Day theme, our "Oceans of Life," was reflective of all that the ocean gives us. Covering roughly 70 percent of the Earth's surface, the ocean provides pharmaceutical, mineral and nutritional resources; enables travel and trade; sustains incredibly diverse and important ecosystems; regulates the climate; and supports livelihoods.

In partnership with NOAA's Ocean and Human Health Initiative (OHHI), KidSafe Seafood's exhibit examines the nexus between seafood and health and debunks many of the mysteries surrounding seafood consumption, particularly for young children. KidSafe Seafood will provide attendees with information on seafood sustainability, KidSafe Seafood's "Best Choices" magnet, a buying guide for sustainable shrimp, information on many other popular seafood species and more.

SeaWeb's Vice President of Science Initiatives Kristian Teleki said of the event: "KidSafe Seafood is a unique program that speaks to feeding our children seafood that is not only safe and good for them, but also good for the environment. What better place than the National Aquarium, where parents and children come to be amazed about the world that lies beneath the surface of the sea, to learn about making the best seafood choices for their kids and how those choices affect them and the sea."
