Our Mission

SeaWeb, founded in 1996 to raise awareness of the growing threats to the ocean and its living resources, is a communications-based, international nonprofit organization that utilizes social marketing techniques to advance ocean conservation. By increasing public awareness, advancing science-based solutions and mobilizing decision makers around ocean conservation, SeaWeb has brought together multiple, diverse and powerful voices for a healthy ocean.

Our Vision

SeaWeb envisions a world where all people understand and act upon the knowledge that a healthy ocean is vital to all life and essential to a sustainable future.

Key Ocean Issues

Today, depletion of marine life, pollution, ocean acidification and climate change threaten the ocean and its living resources and therefore the health of our planet and each of us. But together, we can change this.

Our Approach

Marine issues are complex and involve many different viewpoints and stakeholders. SeaWeb combines a unique, collaborative approach and strategic communications with sound science to catalyze positive change for our ocean.

First we harness the power of social science techniques, such as conducting in-depth interviews and opinion surveys, to gain insight into human perceptions, behavior and level of knowledge about marine issues. This social marketing research and the latest ocean science guide our communications so we can effectively raise awareness of critical issues through our campaigns and other outreach. Once we have built momentum around marine issues, we then dissolve boundaries and broker constructive dialogue among stakeholders to forge strong ocean policies and innovative market solutions to ocean threats.

We continue to educate, engage and inspire the ocean spokespeople, champions and partners we cultivate through our various initiatives, activities and resources. Through this collaboration and continuous engagement, SeaWeb weaves together multiple, diverse and powerful ocean voices, those who can serve as living examples of how we all can work toward achieving a healthy ocean.

What We Do

At SeaWeb we:

Build communications capacity by providing scientists, business leaders, the media, policymakers, nongovernmental organizations and philanthropists with information and skills that enable them to help create a culture of ocean conservation within their sector.

Promote market-based and policy solutions by educating and mobilizing leaders in policy, science, business, and nonprofits around common-sense solutions for a healthy ocean.

Share knowledge and issue expertise by initiating strategic dialogues among scientists, journalists, policymakers and business leaders to promote informed government policies and industry practices.

Establish and execute emblematic media campaigns by designing a communications strategy to engage influential target audiences through effective messages and messengers to secure positive change for the ocean.

Amplify leading voices by working behind the scenes to recruit and train spokespeople and other partners to successfully promote strong ocean conservation policies and market-based solutions.

How SeaWeb is Funded

SeaWeb is able to lead voices for a healthy ocean through the generous and charitable donations from our supporters. SeaWeb receives most of its support from private charitable foundations and a smaller, yet increasingly significant amount from individuals who share our commitment to a healthy ocean. Eighty-five cents of every dollar given to SeaWeb are used to run our programs and initiatives.

SeaWeb recognizes the value of each contribution given, and we work to ensure the maximum possible is used to create a better ocean conservation environment.
